Modul-dance experience. By Ioannis Mandafounis & May Zahry

Ioannis Mandafounis & May Zahry_Pausing © Emmanuelle Bayart (5)Developing our piece Pausing within the context of modul-dance has been a significant experience for us. As in our work, we are always interested in sharing voices through collaboration, we found this context of modul-dance somehow corresponding to this desire – a group of dance houses collaborating in order to bring forward an idea and allow creation to emerge.

Specifically for us, during the creation we went through the residencies in the Duncan Center in Athens and Graner in Barcelona- places which without the frame of modul-dance would be difficult to get to. The two houses were extremely inspiring and rich for the work – the space in Duncan center as well as its amazing surrounding and atmosphere which Penelope nurtures had an essential impact on the process. Also the possibility to meet other artists and share like our meeting with the other residents at that time – Marcos and Pablo has been super inspiring and simply joyful. Read more of this post

La Veronal’s “Siena” awarded by the audience in Barcelona

© Jesús RobiscoThe Catalan audience decided yesterday to award Siena as the Best Dance Show of the Year in the ceremony of the popular Butaca Awards. The piece was created in the framework of the modul-dance project by Marcos Morau and his company La Verona.

Siena takes us to the Italian city to initiate a reflection on the conception of the human body. It represents and has represented the passing of the centuries, and art has involved itself with human material in as many ways as it has found convenient, while artists have use the body as a container and projector of meanings. The piece is an exploration of the history of Italian art, in a journey that begins in the Renaissance, when humankind recovered its self-awareness, and finishes in the modern world. Is the absolute and constant need felt by human beings to contemplate themselves. Observing, recognizing the body’s forms, actions and presence, because, in the end, Siena is the desire to observe it forever until it all gets mixed up.

A new modul-dance premiere

A new modul-dance creation will open in two days at Mercat de les Flors. Marcos Morau, modul-dance 2011 selected artist and his company La Veronal, want to make Siena a place where the body is the center of the stage, as a container and deposit the same way that man first became the center of the world in Florence on XIV century. The work engages aesthetically with the election peripheral flash surrounding the body carried on the scene. We will see a steady build-up, a clearly, gradual transformation of bodies on stage.
